SUMMARY:Meteors on the Mound Star Gazing Event
DESCRIPTION:JDCF invites everyone to Meteors on the Mound for a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower from atop Horseshoe Mound Preserve. Horseshoe Mound is one of the highest points in Jo Daviess County and offers spectacular views of the tristate area from several different outlooks. This is the only time of the year that the preserve is open to the public after dark so it is a special occasion. Suggested donation of $10/person or $25/family. RSVP’s are not required. The event is weather dependent so check back here for updates. \nThere will be family-friendly activities for people of all ages as well a presentation by an expert astronomer. Amateur astronomers will have telescopes onsite so that participants can view various heavenly bodies. If you have a telescope\, please bring it along. Horseshoe Mound Preserve is located at 1679 N Blackjack Road\, Galena. This program is weather dependent so if it is raining\, please check back here or JDCF’s Facebook page for updates.

SUMMARY:Explore Hanley Savanna with NW IL Prairie Enthusiasts
DESCRIPTION:The Northwest IL Prairie Enthusiasts (NIPE) invite the public for a guided walk at its Hanley Savanna property near Hanover\, IL. Members of NIPE meet regularly at Hanley Savanna to inventory plant species\, birds\, wildlife and insect species\, especially the endangered Rusty-patched Bumblebee. This bumblebee is the first bee species to be federally listed as endangered\, but so far has not been documented at Hanley Savanna. This summer the group has encountered a number of bird\, dragonfly and butterfly species\, as well as some bumblebees. And of course\, the prairie plants have been amazing! \nPlease dress for the weather and bring insect repellent\, sunscreen\, and water. Since the walks are weather-dependent\, please check the NIPE Facebook page for last minute updates or changes. The walks are on level ground and generally aren’t a long distance.
