Discover Wapello ~ A Discussion with Archaeologist Phil Millhouse, PhD

October 3 @ 10:30 am - 11:00 am

JDCF will be Live on Facebook with special guest and renowned archaeologist, Phil Millhouse, PhD, at the Wapello Land & Water Reserve, the site of his doctoral field work in 2005. Phil will talk about his initial findings, which contributed to Wapello being placed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its cultural significance, as well as other discoveries he and fellow colleagues have made more recently.  This Facebook Live event will be part of a larger 4 day fundraiser for JDCF called Daring to Inspire. We are asking you to help us inspire a new generation of conservationists through your generous support.

Phil will be joined by JDCF Executive Director, Steve Barg, who will share plans for a proposed Discovery Center at Wapello, a unique collaboration between JDCF and Native American tribal partners who trace their ancestry to NW Illinois. It is known that the broad terraces of Wapello, which is nestled along the Apple River near present-day Hanover, IL have been home to people for more than 11,000 years, as confirmed by artifacts found there: hearths, storage pits, and house remains, along with burial and effigy mounds. The Discovery Center will be a place where these first peoples’ stories can be told by their descendants, both through exhibits and experiences on the land.

To conclude the event, Phil will be presented with the Nancy Hamill Winter Conservation Leadership Award in recognition of his long-standing work with JDCF in preserving, protecting, stewarding, and interpreting Native American heritage sites in Jo Davies County. Phil’s passion for cultural resource preservation combined with his guidance within our work have been instrumental in making JDCF one of a handful of land trusts in the country who actively protect Native American heritage sites as part of their mission. Tune in and help us give Phil a virtual round of applause!

We thank the Apple River State Bank/First Community Bank of Galena for sponsoring our Facebook Live series.
